For twenty years the two scenes shared cities and almost nothing else. Dangdut koplo filled fields; electronic music filled basements. The audiences did not overlap, and the producers did not talk.
That has changed fast, and largely because of tempo. Koplo's standard range sits close enough to a lot of contemporary club music that the transition is a matter of arrangement rather than reinvention.
“The kendang pattern already is a break. Nobody had to invent anything — we just stopped apologising for it.”
The result is a circuit of parties, mostly in Malang, Surabaya and Yogyakarta, where a set can move from a 1998 koplo record to an original production without anyone noticing the seam.
